Scarey Game 2 is a classic BYOND game that I'm sure at least of few of you have played before. I'd like to start playing it again, so here's a run down of what to expect. I'd advise at least skimming through to learn some basics, but you're more than welcome to jump in because chances are you won't pick up on all the nuances until you dive in head first. It can be frustrating/seem clunky at first, the game is definitely confusing, but you can pick up on it by playing and asking questions so please don't hesitate to ask.
If you've played anything on BYOND, you know the interface is awful and things are kinda choppy. But if you can stick with it, you'll have a blast (maybe)!
Here's the gist of Scarey Game:
The Basics:
The controls only involve the arrow keys and your mouse. You can also chat by hitting the “chat” button and then typing in the console line below the main screen.
Inventory:
In point A you'll see the inventory bar. All kinds of magic happens here! Click on an empty spot in your inventory (the ones that say INV) while facing something to pick it up. You can then drop it by hitting the arrow right below. If you click on an item while it's in your inventory, you'll use it. For example, clicking on the Psycho Knife you see in the picture will allow me to slash.
Another cool feature is combining items to make other GREATER items. For instance, there is a canister of “Nitro Gliserine” (it's more like liquid nitrogen than nitroglycerin) you can combine with a fire extinguisher to effectively create a freeze sprayer that'll encapsulate your opponents in ice. To make this deadly combo, simply find both components and drop one of them. Face it, then hit the red and blue tab above the item you wish to combine with the one on the floor. Your lovely combo item will appear in front of you on the floor, where you can pick it up and cause some mayhem.
Pushing, pulling, rotating:
Through the course of the game you might find it in your best interest to push and pull things to better suit your needs. Perhaps moving a spring right underneath a hole in the ceiling to bounce people into a furnace. You can reveal a lot of deadly traps just by messing around with pushing, pulling, and rotating.
At point B you'll find the interface that makes this possible. You can rotate items with the tiny arrows on the sides, push with the arrow on top, and pull with the arrow on the bottom. Just be careful when you're messing around:
Psycho menu:
So you've been lucky enough to be selected as a psycho, CONGRATULATIONS! Your objective is to merely slaughter everyone who's not a psycho (but it's okay if you take down one of your psycho brothers).
As a psycho, you are much stronger than your victims and as such more resilient to damage. You're also graced with the Psycho Knife (much more powerful than the regular knife), and the menu you see at point C.
The third button will allow you to change into costume and let you use your new powers.
The first button is “play dead”, which will put a cross at the top of the screen. Click on that cross to stand back up. This is of course great for baiting people into a false sense of confidence, just don't be too surprised when someone doesn't buy it and pushes you into a fire.
The second button is the “Blood Lust Charge”, which allows you to dash in the direction you're facing while using your knife at the same time. This is an effective attack and will help you more easily kill your targets.
Help! I'm on fire/poisoned/drugged/frozen:
If somebody shoves you into a fire or otherwise lights you up, you'll see a flame icon appear at the top of the screen while you're ablaze. Just click on that rapidly to put out the fire, if you're fast enough you won't be cooked to a crisp!
If you're poisoned, you're going to need to find an anti-toxin kit (these are boxes with purple crosses). You can also combine anti-toxin kits with regular first-aid kits to make a miracle first aid kit that'll regenerate your health and cure your ailments.
If you're drugged, you'll also need an anti-toxin kit. When you're drugged your character will move weirdly and your interface will be messed up, so be very careful in your attempts of self-medication.
Items and obstacles:
Here's a run down of each item and obstacle you'll encounter in the game. Not everything is completely covered and most of this is lifted from the guide found here (http://www.freewebs.com/pakpeople/rogueguides.htm) with revisions:
Knife: The knife is a basic weapon. If you are a non-psycho and kill another non-psycho with it, you will get killed by the game. The knife's attack speed and attack power are at least half that of the psycho knife, so you do not want to use this to go toe to toe with a psycho. Also note that there is no reason you would want to use this instead of the psycho knife. This is a good weapon to use if you have already frozen the psycho, however.
Psycho Knife: This is in every way better than the knife, and psychos get it upon game start. This means that you can only obtain it after a psycho dies or drops it. There's not much reason you would want to discard this weapon. Will kill you if you use it as a non-psycho to kill another non-psycho.
Dart (drug dart, poison dart, and ice dart): The dart alone is useless, as it deals no damage when you hit a target with it. Instead, you want to mix something with it to give it features. The three results of hitting a target with a dart are drugging, poisoning, and freezing respectively. When you hit a target successfully with the dart, it reverts back to a normal dart.
Ketchup: When you use ketchup, you fake death. Your corpse is still “dense”, meaning it can't be walked on which makes it easy to determine a fake. A good psycho loves messing with corpses, so don't rely too much on this.
Can of Oil: The can of oil is one of the best ways to start traps, as when someone steps on it, they slip a significant distance at a fast speed. The oil only goes away when lit on fire.
Ghost Goggles: Lets you see your dead buddies. Good for Tricky Ghost mode.
Matches: Matches can be used to light flammable things (such as oil), and can be used to make a flamethrower when mixed with spray paint.
Spray Paint: Spray paint temporarily blinds anyone you use it on. When it is in flamethrower form, it shoots several flames about 4 tiles ahead of you in a straight line and can be used this way 4 times. It is great for starting large scale fires or blowing up barrels behind walls that hide secret passages. Not to mention it makes a nice weapon. Just be careful when moving while you're shooting flames.
Ice Cube Launcher: This relatively well-hidden weapon shoots ice cubes a very far distance ahead of you and bounce all over the place. This weapon's ice cubes latch onto the target for the rest of the game regardless of fire encounters. The ice cubes not only hurt their target, but permanently lower their health. Ice cubes also increase chances of being frozen. If you know where this weapon is held, it is a great starting weapon to have. Just remember that it's only powerful enough to kill a victim at full health, not a psycho.
Trip Bombs: This is the ultimate weapon in making traps for people. Soon after you place this, a red line goes across the opposite direction from which it was placed (including diagonally). The explosion (like TNT) moves 2 tiles away, which means you can trip it and not die, in many cases. The train will not trip a trip bomb. If you use Speed-X to pass through a trip bomb's beam, the explosion will be delayed until the last echo passes the red line, meaning you can easily pass by a trip bomb with Speed-X. However, this effect is not gained from a psycho's Blood Lust Charge. You can also jump over lines using springboards.
Glue: The glue is placed very similar to gasoline, and exists for a limited time (although very long). Anyone who steps on is stuck until it expires. The only effect glue has is that you cannot be moved, or moved. It can also be combined with the cannon as a projectile.
Speed-X: Speed-X allows about 3 uses before it expires, with each lasting about 30 seconds. Using Speed-X means that you will move at ridiculous speeds whichever direction you press, until you hit another direction or object. Using a Speed-X, you can safely pass trip bombs until the last echo passes the beam, making trip bombs very easy to pass and live through.
Wirecutters: Used to cut wires so periodically they will shoot electricity, killing anything on them (same effect as frayed wires).
Crossbow: Combine this with bolts/arrows and you have a sturdy weapon. When a crossbow bolt hits something that is not a target, it bounces around (and does so very much). When a target is hit, a bolt is stuck in them, effectively capping their max life permanently.
Bolts: Crossbow ammo, see above.
TNT: TNT is properly lit using matches, and when lit, can be picked up and thrown (by clicking it again in your inventory). If it explodes in your inventory, you'll blow up and do damage to everything within 2 tiles of your character. Good for opening secret passages.
Leaf Blower: Leaf blowers are basically better ways of pushing people, as they don't hurt. They have about 3 charges. You can mix a poison needle with a leaf blower to make a poison blower, which is three chances to poison your target (and push him).
Plunger: Melee weapon which caps the health of what it hits.
Med-Kit: Heals you, but doesn't remove permanent damage like plungers and ice cubes.
Anti-Toxin Kit: Removes drug effects and poison effects.
Super Health Kit: Heals you to full and removes effects. Just combine the previously mentioned kits to make it.
Eye Drops: Cures your sight from fire extinguishers and flash bangs.
Flash Bangs: Chucks a flash bang out, which blinds anyone near the blast except for the thrower.
Fire Extinguisher: The fire extinguisher's shot goes out about 3 tiles and has about 3 charges. It can be used to put out fires, naturally. The ice sprayer has 3 charges to freeze anything about 3 tiles in front of you (if you move forward while using this, you WILL get frozen). If you're only in the blast for a VERY short amount of time, it will only make you colder (and more prone to be frozen by other causes).
Decoy: A decoy reproduces your character and runs around randomly. Combine some dynamite with it to make it explosive on contact (or when its timer runs out).
Vitalus Syrup: When you drink this, you adopt a decay similar to poison (unable to be cured), while at the same time you get a boost of strength in stabbing moves. The effect of the syrup lasts until you win or die, a good item to finish things.
“Nitro Gliserine”: Alone it does nothing, but it has icy effects when combined with the fire extinguished, dart, or fire column.
Drug Needle: You can use this as a melee weapon to drug somebody or combine it with a dart to make it into a projectile.
Poison Needle: This causes the poison effect. Poisoning basically makes it so someone slowly takes damage unless they get an anti-toxin kit. Mixing this with the dart or leaf blower gives you a projectile weapon.
Golden Plunger Gun (Golden Plunger Mode only): This shoots out plungers and has infinite ammo.
Gadget Boxes: Mix with each other to form a boulder, spring board, or cannon.
Boulder: Stands still until it is pushed or pulled. Then it moves around, pushing aside movable objects and killing what it passes over. It can also be used as a shield of sorts.
Spring Board: When walked onto, you jump the direction the arrow points. Can be rotated, good for setting up traps.
Cannon: When you mix glue with it, it shoots out a white powder that glues its target to the ground.
Boxes: When destroyed these might contain some kind of item.
Boom Barrels: When lit up or detonated these will explode, destroying everything in a 2 tile radius.
Fire columns: This stationary and rotatable object periodically shoots out flames like a flamethrower. You can apply “nitro gliserine” to it to turn it into an ice column for about 3 sprays.
Known combinations:
Projectiles:
Poison gun = Poison needle + leaf blower
Flamethrower = Matches + spray paint
To shoot the cannon, combine glue with it.
Darts:
Combine a dart with either drugs, “nitro gliserine” or poison.
Gadget boxes:
Box 1 + 2 = Spring
Box 2 + 3 = Boulder
Box 1 + 3 = Cannon
Other:
Exploding decoy = Decoy + dynamite
TNT = Dynamite + matches
Super Health Kit = Anti-toxin kit + health kit
There are supposedly many more combinations that aren't normally disclosed, so make sure to experiment every now and then and maybe you'll find something nifty.
A note about killing:
Killing is the name of the game, but if you kill somebody innocent with a melee weapon (the knives) then you will be killed as well (unless you're a psycho). You actually can get away with killing your friends if you do it through an indirect method/use a projectile of some sort, but I'd recommend against going commando on everyone because not only will you look like a heel but you'll eventually run out of traps/ammo and become prime psycho fodder. In fact, you'll probably get labeled as the psycho if you start doing suspicious things (chat adds a lot to this game)…
Game Modes:
There are a few extra modes to enhance gameplay.
Gold Plunger Mode: Introduces the golden plunger, a projectile weapon with unlimited ammo mentioned above in the items section.
Super Speed Mode: Everybody acts like they're on Speed-X, permanently.
Tricky Ghost Mode: THE BEST MODE IN THIS GAME! Even if you die, you can manipulate things through pushing, pulling, and rotating. Haunt the living and get your revenge!
One-Hit Wonder: Gives the psycho knife one-hit kill properties, might do the same for other weapons. I've never played this mode if you can't tell.
Ye Be Silent: A mode where chatting will make you spontaneously combust. Good for an eerie round!
In conclusion:
Other than ALL THAT INFO, there's nothing to it! You'll catch on after a few games, but it's good to have this information as a reference guide. Just don't let yourself get frustrated and you'll pick up on all of the little tricks that this game has to offer. Ask questions when you're dead and talk to the other ghosts, you'll learn all kinds of things.
